Bergamot perfumes: what do they smell like and which should you try?
Bergamot appears in light citrus scents, but also alongside vanilla, pepper and woods. We have chosen five perfumes that show its different combinations.
Bergamot can be the first thing you notice after spraying perfume: fresh, citrusy and a little green. You will find it in both CK One and Shalimar, although those fragrances take very different directions. In one, it accompanies tea and musk; in the other, it meets iris and vanilla.
If you like this note, you have plenty of choice. Deciding what should accompany it is harder. We have chosen five perfumes from Scenza’s catalogue, from citrusy Bergamotto di Calabria to vanilla-led Shalimar. For each, we give the exact version and describe notes confirmed by the manufacturer, to help you select fragrances to test.
What does bergamot smell like?
Bergamot is a citrus fruit, and the oil used in perfumery comes from its aromatic peel. Calabria in Italy is an important growing region. You may also recognise its aroma from Earl Grey tea. Fragrance-ingredient producer Givaudan describes the material’s origins and uses.
In perfume, bergamot gives citrus-peel freshness with green and floral nuances. Guerlain describes these qualities in Shalimar, where bergamot provides the composition’s fresh opening. Its presence in a note list therefore does not mean that the whole fragrance will be light or exclusively citrusy.
The surrounding notes tell you more. Tea and musk draw attention towards freshness, pepper adds sharpness, and vanilla shifts the balance between citrus and sweetness. Instead of searching for one “best bergamot”, start with a combination that appeals to you.
Five bergamot perfumes in different styles
| Perfume | Version | Where to start comparing |
|---|---|---|
| Acqua di Parma Bergamotto di Calabria | EDT | Bergamot, red ginger and cedar |
| Calvin Klein CK One | EDT | Bergamot, green tea and musk |
| Montblanc Explorer | EDP | Bergamot, vetiver and leather |
| Dior Sauvage | EDT | Bergamot, pepper and ambroxan |
| Guerlain Shalimar | EDP | Bergamot, iris and vanilla |
EDT means eau de toilette and EDP means eau de parfum. Check the label when buying or ordering a sample. Different versions within one line may have different compositions.
Acqua di Parma Bergamotto di Calabria EDT: citrus in the foreground
Start here if bergamot itself drew you to this topic. In this Acqua di Parma composition, it accompanies red ginger and cedarwood, with vetiver, benzoin and musk in the base. The manufacturer describes a citrus-woody profile. See Acqua di Parma’s description.
This is one to try if you are looking for citrus with a touch of wood. Notice how you perceive the ginger alongside the fresh opening. We have selected the classic Blu Mediterraneo Bergamotto di Calabria EDT; similar names for other editions can be confusing when shopping.

Calvin Klein CK One EDT: bergamot with tea
In CK One, bergamot meets green tea. The manufacturer also lists rose and violet, with musk and an amber accord in the base. The brand describes this unisex fragrance as fresh and citrusy. Calvin Klein’s description refers to CK One Eau de Toilette.
If you like tea notes and want something for everyday wear, add it to your sample list. Among these five, it is a useful reference for bergamot with musk. The Calvin Klein catalogue also contains CK All and CK One Essence, so check the full name before buying. Here, we mean the classic CK One EDT.

Montblanc Explorer EDP: bergamot alongside wood and leather
Explorer shows how a citrus opening can combine with a woody character. On its product page, Montblanc lists bergamot, pink pepper and clary sage, followed by notes including patchouli, vetiver, leather and cedar. The brand describes this version as woody, aromatic and leathery. Read the Explorer EDP description.
Consider it if a pleasant citrus opening is not enough for you and you also want to explore a distinctly woody direction. When comparing it with Bergamotto di Calabria, focus on what remains after the first impression. Our selection is the original Explorer EDP in the black bottle.

Dior Sauvage EDT: bergamot and pepper
In Sauvage EDT, Dior pairs Calabrian bergamot with Sichuan pepper and woody ambroxan. It combines fresh citrus with a spicy accent. The manufacturer also highlights the bergamot’s own slightly peppery nuances. Find the note description on Dior’s website.
Compare Sauvage with Explorer if you are interested in men’s perfumes with bergamot and woods. On your skin, check whether you prefer pepper with ambroxan or Explorer’s leathery notes. We mean Sauvage Eau de Toilette. Sauvage Eau de Parfum and Elixir are separate options, so do not automatically substitute them when choosing a sample.

Guerlain Shalimar EDP: bergamot with iris and vanilla
In Guerlain Shalimar, bergamot opens a composition with iris, jasmine and rose, followed by vanilla, tonka and balsamic notes. It shows how a bergamot perfume can take a warm, vanilla direction. This is the manufacturer’s description of Shalimar EDP.
If you like vanilla but are also curious about citrus, set aside a sample of this exact version. Give it time on your skin and check whether you enjoy the whole combination, including when your attention shifts from the opening to the later notes. We have chosen the classic Shalimar EDP.

How do you choose a bergamot perfume for yourself?
Choose two different directions from the table. Try CK One alongside Shalimar if you are torn between tea and vanilla, or Bergamotto di Calabria alongside Explorer if the role of woods interests you. A pair like this makes it easier to name what you actually enjoy.
Try the fragrances on blotters first, then your favourites on your skin. Note your first impression and revisit it later. Ask yourself a simple question: do you still want to smell this fragrance when the citrus opening is no longer taking all your attention? Our guide to finding a perfume that suits you offers more advice.
Once you choose a fragrance, open its Scenza product page and compare offers for the same concentration and size. A good price is more satisfying when you buy the exact version you have already explored.
